The Lifeline Tool
A visual exercise to support focus, prioritisation, and intentional living
'Time is your one non-renewable resource.'
Note that this tool is designed to help you reflect on your priorities. It does this in the context of visualising the limited amount of time that we all have available to us as human beings. Please do not use this tool if you are dealing with loss, grief, or are otherwise likely to be triggered by contemplation of your own mortality. The spirit of this tool is more memento vivere (remember, you must live) than memento mori (remember that you must one day die), but some coachees do find this reflective exercise to be challenging and emotionally raw.
With your lifeline in view, take a few quiet moments with each of the questions below. There are no right or wrong answers – this is your thinking space.
What would you like to do between your retirement and the end of your life?
How would you like to show up during that time?
What does your financial situation need to look like to enable this?
What do you need to do between now and retirement to achieve those financial outcomes?
What do you need to do between now and retirement to live a fulfilled and happy life?
If you could only focus on three things between now and retirement, what would they be, and why?
If you could only focus on one of those three things, which would it be, and why?
